Slow Steaming and Requirement for Marine Cylinder Oils
The economic recession has a significant decrease in the volume of marine transported internationally.Most of shipping companies choose slow steaming which has the advantages that fuel is saved and emissions are reduced.But slow steaming can cause some problems such as loss efficiency of turbocharger and corrosion wear if no sufficient neutralization ability of cylinder oils due to sulfur trioxide can easily form sulfuric acid with water at low temperature.For ultra low sulfur HFO,over lubrication should be concerned otherwise it can lead to scuffing by ash deposit.All of problems bring forward new requirements for cylinder oils.Universal cylinder oil concept and blending on board (BOB) concept are launched to overcome corrosion wear and over lubrication.
