How An Alternative ”China Model” (Lishang-wanglai 礼尚往来) Can Help in Understanding the Uncertain World

Lishang-wanglai (礼尚往来) is a Chinese model of reciprocity and social networks, borrowed from li shang wanglai,a term deeply rooted in Chinese culture, originating from the Confucian book of Li Ji (Book of Rites). The model is derived from longitudinal empirical studies over 70 years in a Chinese village (see:Guanxi or Li Shang Wanglai?--Reciprocity,Social Support Networks and Social Creativity in a Chinese Village,by Chang,2009 in Chinese and 2010 in English). In recent years it has been tested in numerous projects on social support, villagers” autonomy, emergence of a township community,Chinese governance models, entrepreneur relationships in China and UK,and a study of the disappearance of the only indoor Far Eastern / multi-function complex / community in Europe. It has also been applied to comparative studies on new migrants from BRIC countries in the UK,USA,Australia and Japan. The presentation will very briefly summarise the so-called ”China model”,and introduce the alternative lishang-wanglai model with its bottom up approach and use of social creativity as a driver. It will then draw on data from empirical studies to demonstrate the mechanisms by which the alternative ”China model”works followed by a small test.It is believed the alternative China model could be helpful inshaping a local or global society and understanding an uncertain world.
