Can Social Impact Assessment of Infrastructure Proj ects Contribute to Society Building and Social Governance in China
Infrastructure investments have been the backbone of China”s economic upsurge and loans from multilateral and bilateral financial institutions supported the construction of railways, highways, airports and dams in China during the 1980s and 1990s.This development strategy speeded up economic growth, but it also speeded up the fast growing income gap within the Chinese society.Destruction of the environment, damage to health, loss of jobs, involuntary resettlement with the potential for widespread impoverishment-all these external costs of Chinese economicdevelopment can well be characterised as self-generated social risks of development interventions.
