Fused Institutions =(Con)Fused Rationalities? The Development of Financial Capitalism in China
This paper examines the development of the tense relationship between the pursuit of economic efficiency, and the maintenance of political and social order. It asks two central questions:(1) how have the exogenous practices of Western financial capitalism coalesced with the existing institutions and practices of the Chinese political economy in the period since 1978,and (2) what are the implications of this coalescence for the possibility of a financial system as a public good, rather than a means of private profit-seeking?
