Decoupling Regional Economic Growth from Environmental Degradation in China: Policy Approaches
China”s long-standing economic growth has caused serious ecological deterioration. The issues are particularly serious due to rapidly expanding urbanisation and industrialization in all regions. Therefore it is important to decouple economic growth from environmental damages. The aim of this paper is to examine China”s historical and current decoupling trends through literature reviews and data analysis.Based on a well-established evaluation model, this paper estimates China”s 30 provincial correlation coefficients between regional GDP growth rates and the environmental performance over the 2003-2009 periods. In addition, through the cluster analysis,we further examined the regional decoupling levels and observed serious regional disparity in the trends of decoupling the provincial GDP growth from the environmental impacts.
