Villagers” Self-governance, Local Transformation, and the Involvement of Local Elites and Ordinary Villagers in the Process of Land Acquisition and Demolition of Ancestor Hall:Case Study in the Two Villages in Guangdong
Over the past three decades,self-governing systems at village levels have undergone different stages across all over China.Among other matters, the establishment of villagers” Committees (VCs) plays a significant role when dealing with local aftairs; the designation of Villagers” Representative Assembly (VRA) and Villagers” Assembly (VA) is supposed to be checking the operation of VCs.The quality of the villagers” self-governance in rural China has some relations with local transformation such as the types of economic industry and the degrees of urbanization. Not surprisingly, openness and transparency of local politics is not necessarily achieved by economic boom.Conversely, new emerging of local elites is affecting the structure of local power and bringing in new barriers to local democratization and self-governance.
