Effective Use of Global Rankings in Making Institutional Strategic Plans and Positioning for Building a World—Class University
Since entering the 21st century,the development of college rankings has become internationalized.Four major global rankings have been developed up to the present,including Academic Ranking of World Universities,World University Rankings,Webometrics Ranking of World Universities and Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities.Currently,a major concern for most top university administrators is how to use global rankings wisely on the institutional level for both short term and long term strategic planning.The main purpose of the paper is to explore the most influential factors in the 4 major global rankings which will affect the rank mobility of an institution.Based on an analysis of correlation coefficients and K mean of cluster,a sophisticated model of strategic institutional planning for building a world class university is proposed at the end of the paper as a conclusion.
