A Case Study for Sustainable Housing Development in the UK

Climate change has been a big issue all over the world and a wide range of sustainable development has been studied and designed.The UK government is actively tackling this problem with a target of zero carbon emissions.This paper focuses on three eco-villages in Britain-Beddington Zero Energy Development (BEDZED),Greenwich Millennium Village (GMV) and Hockerton Housing Project (HHP).This study aims to understand the trend of sustainable development in the UK and provide basic data for the adaption of zero carbon housing developments in Korea.By studying these projects,this study seeks to propose a new direction for sustainable development in Korea.The results of this study are as below.( 1 ) Urban cases were initiated by the government,and focused on energy,transportation and materials.Rural case was developed by private citizens and communities,as it is small,and government support is concentrated in urban areas.(2) The general characteristics-energy,water,transportation and materials-adjust to all cases effectively.It is also estimated that these factors are crucial toward realizing a zero carbon emission goal.(3) The characteristics of development interiors are diversity of unit plans,recycled materials,furniture and systemized construction components.
