Color Application in Public Areas for Place Indication Focusing on the Interior Walls of Subway Stations in Seoul and Hong Kong
Subway stations as major public place is considered as being required wayfinding affordance,as they are becoming multi-functional,and mega-scaled structure.? Previous researchers suggested that greater physical differentiation for each region enhances wayfinding behavior,and public colors can be used for it.The purpose of this study is to draw the characteristics of color arrangement in the interior walls of subway transfer stations in Seoul and Hong Kong by investigating regional interior color application that function as visual cues.For the survey,16 subway transaction stations out of 368 subway stations in Seoul and 14 stations out of 86 subway stations of Hong Kong were selected and the states of expressing place identity as visual cues for wayfinding were analyzed.The examination has been proceed during February and March 2009 by visiting each subject station and photograph and measure interior space color using Minolta spectrophotometer CM-2600d.The results indicate that there is similarity of ‘ hue” in Seoul and Hong Kong but by using value and saturation differently,it has different outcome.Regional differentiation in color application appeared generally low in both Seoul and Hong Kong.In terms of ‘ legibility” and visibility in ‘ hue” between main colors and accent colors in each region,the rate of Hong Kong appeared as higher than that of Seoul.In case of Hong Kong,colors with high saturation are applied as main color in large portion of area and divides regions by main color which work as visual cues and color with low saturation is used for accent color and have no function of visual cue but applied as aesthetic reason.The findings suggest that legibility and visibility in each region of subway stations of Seoul should be improved by creating more contrast in arranging public colors for affording wayfinding.
