Sustaining Aesthetic: An Excluded Dimension of Environmental Ethics
Ethical value has always been a strong premise for design activity.Within the framework of moral relativism this value can vary depending on the culture or society surrounding it.This poses problem when design spread across cultures. One of the examples is the Modernist ethical claim in creating designs that can uplift the spirit of the people. This resulted in widespread application of modern austere design that invaded the existence of indigenous design and in turn resulted in overwhelming use of natural resources that led to environmental problems. These problems are then often solved by techno-remedial solution. This paper argues that such solutions should not be viewed as ultimate way out to environmental problems.Instead, more attention should be given to how to sustain intangible needs such as aesthetic need. This is because in order to create sustainable design it is important to find a way to sustain the aesthetic need.
