Purification of Artificial Floating Island System on Creek Flowing into Dian-Chi Lake
Contaminants in creeks flowing into Dian-Chi Lake are the main inputs source for Dian-Chi Lake eutrophication.Artificial Floating Island(AFI) is a vegetated floating structure installed in streams, lakes or reservoirs. There are many functions of AFI concerning water environment management such as water purification, habitat for wild life, and improvement of lake shore scenery. In this study the function of AFI system as water purification in Da-qing creek flowing into Dian-Chi Lake was investigated. The whole AFI system placed along the creek bank was made up of five units which consisted of two units of aquatic plant, three units of elastic stuffing. Each unit comprised five segments which were made of PVC frame and polystyrene as a float. The size of each segment was 4m × 2m × 1.5m.Two years survey made it clear that AFI system works well as water purification by plant nutrient uptake, nitrification activity of root-associated,bio-membrane bacteria, filtration and sedimentation. The average annual removal of COD,TN and TP by AFI system were 5.2%,4.2% and 7.9%,respectively.The area pollution load removal of COD,TN and TP were 401.5,50.0,5.4 mg/(m2 · d).Pollutants in AFI area water decreased significantly.Water quality parameters were much better compared to the same area after the AFI system construction.
