Developments in UK Structural Integrity Assessment Procedures
Within the UK,there are two major structural integrity procedures, which are routinely used to assess pressure vessels in the nuclear power industry. These are:R5,Assessment Procedure for the High Temperature Response of Structures, and R6,Assessment of the Integrity of Structures Containing defects.Other UK procedures such as BS7910,which cover defect assessment, have strong similarities with R5 and R6.This paper first briefly describes the background to the development of R5 and R6 and sets out their current status. Then, recent developments in the procedures are described, including:the use of modified ductility exhaustion methods for creep-fatigue initiation; the simulation of the welding process to predict residual stresses in austenitic pressure vessels; calculation of elastic-plastic and creep crack-tip parameters for combined primary and secondary loads;and strain-based methods for fracture assessment.
