The Impact of Motivation and Ability on Firm Internet-enabled Supply Chain Integration

Fostering Internet-enabled Supply Chain Integration (IeSCI) is becoming critical for developing competitive advantage. However, our understanding about the antecedents of IeSCI participation is limited.Drawing upon organizational motivation theory, dynamic capabilities theory, and motivation-ability theory, this study investigates how a firm”s specific motivation and ability impact its IeSCI participation, and how ability moderates the influences of motivations. The results suggest that organizational ability, namely IT capabilities and absorptive capacity both positively influence firm IeSCI participation, and three of four organizational motivations (i.e.,efficiency,agility,and complementarities motives) can significantly pull firm IeSCI participation too.In addition,it presents that ability can partially moderate the relationships between motivations and firm IeSCI participation. We conclude with implications and suggestions for future research.
