Social Insurance: The United States Social Security System

The Social Security system in the United States was initiated in 1935 in response to social and economic issues caused by the Great Depression. It has evolved through the years and currently assists 50 million people. It is best known for its retirement benefits, but it actually assists surviving spouses and children,as well as disabled workers and their dependents. In spite of recent criticism and cries for reform of the system,it is the nation”s most successful and for the most part financially secure social insurance system the country has; it offers a safety net for workers and their families in the event that the primary source of income is lost due to retirement, disability or death.
