Urban Renewal in High-dense Cities: Hong Kong as a Model?
Developing cities in the 21st century often sever their historical connections and preserve less and less collective memories in the form of buildings.Globalisation and uniformity are shaping urban form in many world cities. The traditional housing stock, memorable urban living and built heritage have become unfamiliar to our children and future generation.Owing to infrastructural development, massive urban renewal for higher return on investment and efficiency of land use, have caused many cities lost its traditional character and ”flavours” and become more monotonous and internationalised;authentic housing blocks and houses are being replaced with massive concrete and glass facade tower blocks;social ties and sense of neighbourhood have been broken up.Cities lose their glimmers and attractions with respect to historical uniqueness, local and cultural identity. As a city has undergone rapid growths or sometimes under uncontrollable and chaotic developments, there are often debates over conservation versus redevelopment;debates on economic values over social and culture values.Among these issues, the loss of traditional residential buildings and blocks and living is a significant aspect for arousing social concerns and academic concerns in particular.
