Optimization of Submerged Ceramic Micromembrane Filtration for Surface Water Treatment
Coagulation as Micro-membrane filtration pretreatment has become a widely accepted process for drinking water treatment, but the frequency ofbackwashing and the low recovery remains a significant problem. The objective of this study was to prolong filtration time without backwashing and air scrubbing. An artificial cake layer made from flocs was used for decreasing membrane fouling.Different coagulation conditions were tested. The filtration time without backwashing and air scrubbing was prolonged to 17 hours by optimizing the coagulation.Membrane fouling highly depended on pH compared to coagulant dosing. The results of this research show that (ceramic) membrane filtration time can greatly be prolonged without backwashing, and that recovery can be improved.
