Variations in Cadmium Sorption from Aqueous Solution Using Activated and EDTA Dosed Cotton Linters

This study investigated the viability of modified cotton linters as ádsorbent for the removal of cadmium from aqueous solution in a batch process. The effect of Bleaching, activation and EDTA dosing of the biomass was studied.Experimental parameters such as contact time,pH,initial concentrations, adsorbent dose and temperature were investigated. The results of the investigations showed that at an optimum pH of 5,EDTA dosed cotton linter had removal capacity of 3.985mg/g vhereas bleached and activated linters had 2.074mg/g and 2.88mg/g respectively.Sorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min of interaction with the metal. The sorption mechanism followed Lagergren pseudo-second order kinetics. It is suggested that intra-particle diffusion is not the only rate limiting factor. The sorption capacity at equilibrium increased from 2.88mg/g to 4.54mg/g at an adsorbent dose of 2g.Temperature in the range of 25 - 45℃ showed restricted effects on removal (3.98mg/g at 25℃ and 1.988mg/g at 45℃).Results indicated that Freundlich model gave better experimental fit when compared with Langmuir equation.
