Sustainable development of China tuna purse seining in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean

The Western and Central Pacific Ocean(WCPO)has become the most productive tuna fishing ground.At present,many factors are exerting more and more pressures on purse seining ships and enterprises,such as the high fuel prices,the stricter fishery protection measures from pacific islands countries,and increasing fishing efforts,the higher cost of fishing stuff and labor,and the seasonal or annual variations and increasing scarcity of tuna resources.As for China purse seining fleets,Taiwan has the characteristics of early start,more fishing boats,and better production,while mainland starts late comparatively,but develops faster and operates well,which are attracting more and more attentions of many researchers and fisheries management organizations.To sustainably develop Chinese distant waters purse seining fleets,this paper analyzes the status quo and tuna protection policies,and problems confronted,and tries to find ways to develop China tuna purse seining fleets under present circumstances.
