Antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of the endophytes from Scapania verrucosa Heeg
The present study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of the endophytes isolated from Scapania verrucosa Heeg.,which belongs to the class of liverworts.A total of 49 endophytic fungi were isolated from S.verrucosa, classified into seven genera and one family in our previous work.In this study, the cytotoxic activityof the endophytesWas a ssessedusingthebrine shrimp lethality bioassay, and seven of which showedpotent toxicity against the brine shrimp with LC50 values less than 20μg/mL.T-30 Was found to be the most toxic with a LC50value of 7.15μtg/mL.MoreoveL T-27 was shown to exhibit strongest antibacterial activity against staphylococcus aureus with MICs Iess than 0.25 mg/mL and 4 m g/mL,which can inhibit the growth of two standard strains viz.ATCC 25923 (MSSA)and ATCC 43300(MRSA)in a time dependent manner, respectively. These results suggested that the endophytes in S.verrucosa might serve as a potential source for production of natural bioactive products.thus Warranted furt her investigation.
