Lepidium Sativum:An Ethnopharmacological and Biological Review
Lepidium sativum Linn.(Brassicaceae),popularly known a sgarden cressin English,is widely used in traditional and folklore medicine since ancient times. The utility of garden cress as a medicinal plant has increased many fold in recent years. This paper reviews the ethnopharmacology, the biological activities and the correlated chemical compounds of Lepidium sativum.Despite its potential therapeutic value few serious attempt has been made to work out its phytochemistry. The phytochemical studies haves hown the presence of many secondary metabolites belonging to glycosides, alkaloids, terpenic constituents, flavonol glycosides and steryle ster. The crude extracts have been found to possessva rious bioactivities including fracture healing,anti-inflammatory,diuretic,hepatoprotective,nephropharmacological,chemoprotective,contraceptive activities,as well as effects on cardiovascular system, digestive system and respiratory system.Inview of the wide range of medicinal uses,it is imperative that more clinical and pharmacological trials should be conducted to investigate unexploited potential of Lepidium sativum as a drug.At the same time serious efforts for high quality studies are necessary to identify the active constituents of the plant.
