3-Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid(AKBA)attenuates hepatic granuloma in C57BL/6 mice with Schistosoma japonicum infection

The egg antigens induce granuloma formation, and then granuloma can develop to fibrosis mainly in intestine and liver portal system. The hepatic fibrosis is the important cause of morbidity and mortality in human beings infected with schistosoma. The AKBA have been confirmed to have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity, however, much less is known regarding the role of AKBA in schistosome egg-induced liver granuloma. In this study,we investigated the effect of ABKA on Schistosoma japonicum(S.japonicum)egg-induced liver granuloma. The infected mice with S.japonicum cercariae were injected with AkBA at the onset of egg granuloma formation. Our results showed that AkBA treatment significantly reduced liver granuloma size in the liver. The protective effect of AkBA on liver granuloma was accompanied by increased LTB4 and PGE2 protein expression, and decreased MMP-9 mRNA and protein expression. Therefore,it is indicated that AKBA can significantly attenuate S.japonicum egg-induced hepatic ganuloma.which may be partly dependent on the increased some biochemical media.
