基于生物质谱技术支撑的化学生物学策略解析中药及方剂科学问题的复杂性
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), one of traditional medicines, is nowexhibiting expansive medical implication in remedying diverse diseases in China, manyAsian countries, or even western countries, yet TCM has been an importantcomplementation to modern western medicine, it therefore is drawing growing attentionfrom biomedical community across the world. However, The chemical complexity ofTCM leads to its uncertain bioactive constituents and resulted mechanism of action, aswell as toxicity cannot be discerned readily (Figure 1). Recently, there are growingevidence to support applicability of mass spectrometry technique in the current study ofTCM formulae and Chinese medicinal plants involving chemical identification,characterization of metabolic fingerprinting, and elucidation of system toxicity andmechanism of action. In this review, a line of representative illustrations involving adiversity of applicability of mass spectrometry technique in the study of TCM formulaeand Chinese medicinal plants will be discussed intensively with emphasis on massspectrometry utilization to characterizing chemical composition, metabolic signatures,system toxicities and therapeutic mechanisms of TCM formulae and Chinese medicinalplants (Figure 2). Besides, The use of mass spectrometry based metabolomics strategy inthese applicable patterns is also given a special focus in the event of its holistic viewpointin the understanding of physio-pathological processes and events with extremely coherentto TCM wisdom in the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases, as well as its predictivecapability with broadly extending to better understand more scientific questions in thefield of TCM sciences (Figure 3).
