Preparation and in vitro evaluation of plasma-sprayed bioactive akermanite coatings
Bioactive ceramic coatings on titanium (Ti) alloy play an important role for orthopedic application. In this study, akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7) bioactive coatings are prepared by plasma sprayingtechnique. The coating mainly contains akermanite crystal phase and portion of amorphous phase. The bonding strength between the coatings and Ti-6Al-4V substrates is around 38.7-42.2 Mpa,which is obviously higher than that of conventional hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings prepared bysame coating method. The prepared akermanite coatings reveal distinct apatite-mineralizationability in simulated body fluid (SBF). Furthermore, akermanite coatings support the attachmentand proliferation of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). The proliferation rateof BMSCs on akermanite coatings is obviously higher than that on HA coatings. The resultssuggest that akermanite coatings on Ti-6Al-4V substrates may be used for preparation oforthopedic implants due to their excellent bonding strength, apatite mineralization ability andcytocompatibility.
