The Echocardiographic Challenges in Mitral Stenosis Diagnosis and Assessment
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), mostly the 2DE techniques, could be used to assess mitral valve morphology with particular attention to commissural fusion and valve leaflet calcification, the two most important determinants of the severity of mitral stenosis. This assessment has been proven to be useful in patient selection for surgical or PTMC procedures, and the immediate and long-term outcome can be predicted from echocardiographic finding based grading scores system. The degree of mitral regurgitation could also be assessed and has an influence on outcome also. Originally, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been used to aid in the detection of left atrial thrombi and may be useful in guiding transseptal puncture and in predicting clinical outcomes.
