Integrating Mechanical Design with Multi-Disciplinary Research
Research funding seems more plentiful for science based subject areas. Mechanical design is a very old discipline, it is engineering and it is the applications of known physical principles. It seems R&D topics in mechanical design are less fundable. Nonetheless, with new discovery in science, there come the applications which utilize the new discovery and understanding for elevating the living standards of mankind. This paper presents the design of an adsorbent natural gas storage tank intended for vehicle application. The design followed a commonly accepted “process approach.” The design utilizes traditional and newly acquired knowledge in thermal science, chemical engineering, and physical chemistry. In a sense, the design is not so much a “traditional” mechanical design. However, it could be the new form and norm of mechanical design, that quickly turns new science based discoveries into novel and unique applications.
