Measurements of Laminar Separation Bubbles on a NACA4412 Airfoil
Three-dimensional, three-component flowfield measurementtechnique was used to investigate the locations of separation, transition and reattachment of a flow with laminar separationbubble. The experiments were carried out in a water tunnel ona NACA4412 airfoil at Reynolds numbers of 50,000 and100,000 at different angles of attack. The locations ofseparation, transition and reattachment were compared withthose estimated from the surface pressure data obtained byXFOIL. The experimental results of the lower Reynolds casesshowed very good agreement with the estimated locations anda well-defined reversed flow region. Several measures wereused to determine the location of the onset of transition. Thevalues of the Reynolds normal and shear stresses showeddistinct increases at the predicted location of transition forcases at both Reynolds numbers tested.
