Persistent Current Operation Test in MgB2 Magnet with High jc Superconducting Joints
Persistent current (PC) operation test was done in an MgB2 magnet with two high jc joints and a superconducting switch. The test was a demonstration to the MgB2 magnets designed for a test magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and done in liquid He immersion at 4.2 K. The critical current and the resistance of the joints were measured in short samples and estimated according to the field decay curve of the magnet. It was shown that, with carefully selected heat treatment conditions and mechanical reinforcement methods, joints in batch produced MgB2 wire can be satisfying in enhancing the time stability of MRI magnets.
