Effects of pore size and orientation on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 1-3 type porous PZT ceramics

The 1-3 type porous PZT ceramics with one dimensional ordered pore channel structure and high porosity were fabricated by directional freeze-casting process, in which tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) was taken as slurry solvent and pore channel template and -30 °C alcohol was taken as cooling agent. The effects of pore channel orientation and pore diameter on the dielectric, piezoelectric and acoustic impedance properties of porous PZT ceramics were discussed in this article. All samples possessed high piezoelectric coefficient (d33) due to the special one dimensional ordered porous structure of the PZT ceramics. The research showed that piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the porous PZT ceramics mainly depended on the pore channel orientation level and were improved with enhancing of pore channel orientation level. The acoustic impedances were ranged from 1.45 to 1.35 Mrayls which could match well with those of biological tissue and water, therefore, it would be beneficial in improving acoustic matching by minimizing energy loss at the interface of the ceramic and medium.
