Rencent advances on microcapsule for self-healing polymer composites
Microencapsulation approach for self-healing polymer composites is by far the most studied self-healing concept in recent years, which could significantly extend the working life and safety of the polymer composites for a broad range of applications. The methods of preparing microcapsule for self-healing polymer composites, including common chemical methods, physicochemical methods, physical methods, and new methods such as emulsion droplet template method and rapid expansion of supercritical solution (RESS) method were reviewed in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were compared, which indicate that different Characteristic micapasules should be obtained by suitable methods in that the roles that the influencing factors play in different fabricating process are various. The self-healing mechanism was expounded. The summarization of mechanical propeties of capsule shells and matrix shows that their fracture toughness must have match relation so that the microcapsule can burst and release healing agent when triggering by microcrack, which means the difference of their fracture toughness should be in certain range. Through summary of self-healing chemicals such as healing agent, catalyst and self-healing reaction which is studied recently, it is concluded that self-healing system based on ring-opening metathesis plolymerization (ROMP) is most suitable for healing polymer composites. In the end, the future developmenat of microcapsule for self-healing polymer composites were prospected.
