Improved corrosion resistance of Mg-9Gd-4Y-1Nd-0.6Zr alloy by Ce addition
To obtain better corrosion resistance for Mg-9Gd-4Y-1Nd-0.6Zr alloy, the influence of Ce on the Mg alloy microstructure and corrosion resistance was studied by experimental methods such as optical microscopy (OM),scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), corrosion weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization etc. The Mg alloy grain size decreased with Ce addition, the block β phase turned into continuous and uniformly net, Mg12Ce phase occurred. For the Mg alloy with Ce, corrosion potential moved positively about 141 Mv, corrosion current density decreased about 45%, compared with Mg-9Gd-4Y-1Nd-0.6Zr alloy. The results suggested that corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy improved by Ce addition.
