Acupuncture for Epilepsy:Implications and Applications

1 IntroductionSince approved by the European Union in 1994 and FDA (USA) in 1997 as an adjunctive therapy for medically and surgically refractory epilepsy, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been in ever growing need and goes beyond to a variety of health disorders such as depression, anxiety, headache, memory and learning deficits, Alzheimer”s disease, heart failures or even weight loss etc. However, it is an expensive and invasive procedure that may have many potential side-effects and complications, and needs to be used with caution. The exact therapeutic mechanisms of VNS are not fully understood, though it is speculated that VNS causes the slow hyperpolarization of the cortical neurons, modulate the synchronization of the brain electrical activities, regulate the balance of the excitatory and inhibitory amino acids and the pro- and anti-inflammatory circulating cytokines etc.
