Application of Capillary Type MF Membrane to the Pre-treatment of Seawater RO Desalination for Stabilizing the RO Operation
In the 21st century, numbers of seawater reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants have increased to meet worldwide great demands for fresh water. Recently, it has become a trend that the UF/MF membrane technologies are applied to the pre-treatment of RO to stabilize the RO operation. With the growing need, Hydranautics - A Nitto Denko Company have developed new membrane product HYDRAcap?MAX to apply to a wide range of feed water quality from wastewater primary treatment to RO pre-treatment based on the new concepts with having the benefits of fiber strength, low footprint and high recovery. This paper introduces HYDRAcap?MAX which is the new MF capillary module of outside-in flow configuration. Membrane strength is improved by using PVDF polymer, which allows us to have better physical strength and chemical resistance. This improvement results in protecting fibers from the breakages, which are the main cause for the problem in product water quality. Low footprint is achieved by installing higher membrane area per module. The lower footprint, the lower installment cost. High recovery is achieved by minimizing the use of product water for back flushing. Therefore, we can eliminate a back flushing pump in the system and can build more simple system. With these features, pilot test was conducted as a pre-treatment of seawater RO desalination. The result showed the capability of HYDRAcap?MAX that operates stable and produces superior water quality with high reliability. These features and results will benefit the plant-owners in reduction of Capex and Opex of the SWRO plants.
