Removal of Fe(II) from Aqueous Solution Using Pomegranate Husk Carbon:Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies

Pomegranate husk carbon was tested for its ability to absorb iron (II) ions from solutions with the variation in the parameters of pH, contact time, sorbent weight, metal concentration and temperatures. The sorption process was analyzed on the basis of pseudo-fist-order, pseudo-second-order kinetic models and also by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity for pomegranate husk activated carbon as calculated by Langmuir model were found to be 18.52 mg g-1 at pH 6.0, 1 g L-1 of biosorbent concentration and 29℃. Thermodynamic parameters such as the changes of free energy, enthalpy and entropy were also evaluated. The results indicate that the sorption of iron(II) ions onto the pomegranate husk carbon is a exothermic process that can be well fit with Langmuir adsorption model and pseudo-fist-order kinetic model.
