Effect of pentoxifylline on the microglia of the spinal cord in rat with injury of the branches of the sciatic nerve
Neuropathic pain is initiated by a lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system. It is associated with severe, chronic sensory disturbances characterized by spontaneous pain, enhanced responsiveness to noxious stimulus (hyperalgesia), and pain in response to a normally nonnoxious stimulus (allodynia). Recently, however, the neuroimmune activation and neuroinflammation, which are indicated by the microglia and astrocytes hypertrophy and proliferation and the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the CNS, have been considered to play a major role in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain”1”.
