Protection of propofol on the retina injury induced by intestinal isehemia-reperfusion in rats

BackgroundThe intestinal ischemia-reperfusion is generally exist in the surgery such as trauma, shock, bowel obstruction, and organ transplantation. This reperfusion injury can result in multi-organ functional lesion, for example, the liver, the lung and the kidney, also it can do the same to the retina”1”. Retina is the foundation of visual function, which is sensitive to circulatory disturbance and when it happens retina will be ischemic, anoxic, and visual impaired. Experiments confirmed that this damage is reletated to the ischemia-reperfusion to a certain extent . As a previous study showed benefical effects of propofol on intestinal ischaemia-reperfusion injury”2”,we hypothesized that it would lead to a reduction in the retina injury induced by intestinal ischemia-reperfusion in rats. The impact of commonly applied anaesthetics such as propofol on this type of ischaemia-reperfusion injury has not been investigated. Benefits of I.v.anaesthesia with propofol have been reported, presumably due to attenuation of free radical production. Our aim was to quantify injury severity via measurement of SOD and MDA,which are the commonly used indication of active oxygen.
