In—vivo Range of Motion of the Lumbar Spinous Processes
Interspinous process(ISP)devices have been introduced for clinical use in the lumbar spine. These devices distract the spinous processes with the aim of enlarging the spinal canal and neural foramina.Although these devices are only approved for the treatment of spinal stenosis, their use had been proposed for herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, instability, and others. In addition。Several studies have shown promising short term clinical outcomes”1”.However,the fundamental kinematics of spinous processes during daily weightbearing postures has not been reported in the 1iterature.This paper quantifies splnous process kinematics of normal subjects using a combined MR and fluoroscopic image matching method in order to provide baseline information for further ISP device design and for further surgical improvement.
