Validation of the EQ-5D in a general population sample in urban Cnina
Purpose To evaluate the reliability and validity of theEQ．5D in a general population sample in urban China．Methods Thousand and eight hundred respondents in 18communities of HangzhOH，China were recruited by multi—stage stratified random sampling．Respondents self-admin-istered a questionnaire including the EQ-5D，the SF-36，anddemographic questions．Test-retest reliability at 2-weekintervals was evaluated using Kappa coefficient，the intra-class correlation coefficient．The standard error of mea-surement(SEM)was used to indiCate the absolutemeasurement error,Construct validity was established usingconvergent，discriminant，and known groups analyses．Results Complete data for all EQ-5D dimensions wereavailable for 1.747 respondents(97％)．Kappa valueswere from 0．35 to 1．0．The ICCs of test-retest reliabilitywere 0．53 for the EQ．5D index score and 0．87 for the EQVAS score．The SEM values were 0．1 3(9．22％range)and4．20 f4．20％range)for the EQ-5D index and EQ VASSCOreS。respectively．The Pearson’S correlation coefficientsbetween the EQ-5D and the SF-36 were stronger betweencomparable dimensions than those between lCSS compara-ble dimensions，demonstrating convergent and discrimi．nant evidence of construct validity．The Chinese EQ-5Ddistinguished well between known groups：respondentswho reposed poor general healtll and chronic diseases hadworse HRQoL than those without．Older people，females，people widowed or divorced，and those with a lowersocioeconomic status reposed poorer HRQoL．Respon-dents reporting no problems on any EQ-5D dimension hadbetter scores on the SF-36 summary scores than thosereporung problems．Conclusions The Cmnese version of the EQ-5D demon-strated acceptable construct validity and faix to moderatelevels of test-retest reliability in an urban general popu-lation in China．
