FROM POLITIC PRESSURE TO CULTURAL CONSTRAINT: THE FIRST STEPS OF SURFING IN HAINAN
INTRODUCTION: TOURISM AND SEASIDE IN CHINA: FROM IGNORANCE TO THE FIRST STEPS By 2000, the seaside in China was barely approached by tourism. Therefore, the Chinese domestic tourists, the large majority of the tourists in China1 prefer to travel inland and for most of them desert the coastline. Several reasons may explain this finding. First of all, The Chinese domestic tourism is a recent phenomenon, subsequent to the 1978 reforms and that was not taken into account by the Chinese government before 1989 (Zhang, 2002). The Chinese seaside tourist practices did not start before the early 2000s even if some spots were obviously visited by the party Executives since the 1960s as in Beidaihe (in Hebei province). In recent years one can observe that the beaches nearby the biggest cities in Eastern China are very often overcrowded on weekends and during short holidays.
