RAPID: A Radiosity Applicable to Porous Individual Facets for Complex Vegetation Scenes

A novel computer graphics-based radiosity model applicable to porous individual facet, named RAPID, is presented for fast calculating multiple scattering and leaving radiances for complex scenes containing vegetation canopies. A collection of horizontal facets are used to construct complex crowns of trees or crops. Solid as the facets look, they are porous and representing clusters of leaves, which will be projected dynamically and instantly based on its thickness, leaf area index, leaf angle distribution and leaf clustering conditions. In this way, the requirement of huge memory and computing time for realistic models can be significantly reduced. The view factors between these porous polygons are also defined. The approach has an ability to simulate arbitrary vegetation canopies for complex landscape. The use of the innovative technique is evaluated with directional reflectance from both field measurements and model comparisons.
