Posterior nutcracker phenomenon: a rare variant of nutcracker syndrome
Left renal vein nutcracker phenomenon, characterized by the compression of the left renal vein (LRV) between the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and the abdominal aorta, resulting in increased pressure in the LRV, congestion of the left kidney, and, occasionally, development of collateral venous pathways, was first described in 1950.”1” The Belgian physician De Schepper named this phenomenon as ”Nutcracker Syndrome” (NCS), because the LRV was compressed by the abdominal aorta and the SMA as the two arms of a ”nutcracker”.”2” While Posterior nutcracker syndrome, one of the rarer variants of this phenomenon, is characterized by the retroaortic position of the LRV and its compression between the aorta and spine.
