Morphological and molecular characterization of a new species of Thalassiosira (Bacillariophyta) in China
A nanoplanktonic strain was isolated from Taipingjiao of Qingdao, China. The basic morphological character under light microscope observation and the valve structure under electronic microscope observation of the new isolate were similar with those of Thalassiosira allenii Takano, T. partheneia Schrader and T. hispida Syvertsen. However, the new isolate is distinguished from T. allenii in girdle view, density of areola and the number of strutted processes in a circle, from T. partheneia in diameter of the valve, valve view, density of areola, number of supported strutted processes and the place of labiate process, and from T. hispida in density of areola, the number of strutted processes and the absent of a capillary protuberance. Internal view of valve disclosed that the new isolate possessed loculate areolae with individual cribra, semi-continuous cribra on valve face and continuous cribra on valve mantle from internal view of valve surface. Valve face fultoportulae had satellite pore cover and cowlings.
