Horizontal gene Iransfer greatly facililates bacterial evolution and fitness.Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs)are a diverse group of mobile elements found in both Gram-positive and Gram—negative bacteria.ICEs are deftned as self-transmissible integrative elements lhal encode a fu¨complement of conjugation machinery.Several welI characterized ICEs have also been shown to encode associated intricate regulatory systems lhal controI excision of Ihe ICE from lhe chromosome and,when applicable,subsequent onward conjugative lransfer.These multi.talented entities can promote their own mobilization and lhus contribute to hodzontal lransfer of virulence determinants.
