The nature of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB)
The bottom of the seismic low-velocity zone (LVZ) beneath the ocean basins is at about 220 km depth,whereas the top is determined by the thickness of the lithospheric lid. Conductive heat loss or thermal contractioncan explain both the ocean depth (first order) and lithosphere thickness (L) as a function oflithosphere age (i.e., L/Age, or the half-space model (HSM》.
