Recently, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been increasingly employed in the study ofbiological molecules,1,2from DNA and peptides to whole proteins,and cells. However, visible excitationlaser sources commonly used in SERS experiments can cause photochemical reactions on the surface as well as fluorescence from the adsorbed macromolecules.
