The Syntax of Verbs in English

1. The account. A purely lexicalist account (Chomsky 1993, 1995) is proposed to account for subject-verb agreement and certain facts concerning VP-ellipsis in English. It is suggested that all inflected verbs are formed in the lexicon. Thematic verbs are inserted in V whereas finite auxiliary verbs have and be as well as modals are inserted in T. T in English may be featural, i.e., non-affixal, (Lasnik 1995) and hence need not be morphologically supported. Inflected verbs in V and featural T must AGREE (Chomsky 1998) observing locality.
