The Extended Functional Projection of P in Mandarin
Along the vP-shell analysis by Larson (1988), it has been argued recently in the literature that the lexical category P, just like the lexical category V, also entails an extended projection (an FP) that behaves like a pP-shell (Van Riemsdijk 1990; Rooryck 1996; Ayano 2000; Thomas 2001, 2003, 2004; B. Gehrke 2007; inter alia). In this paper, we provide empirical evidence from post-verb PPs in Modern Mandarin and argue that such a functional projection of PP is crucial in interpreting the relevant event structure of Mandarin verbs.
