Classifiers: Universal or Specific?

Classifiers (henceforth CL) are generally regarded as language specific in previous research, for they only occur in some certain languages such as those in Southeastern Asia (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, etc.). Cinque (2006), making a preliminary discussion on this issue, concludes “even traditional ‘non-numeral classifier’ languages are numeral classifier languages, with mostly abstract, or non-pronounced classifiers.” This paper, with a different analysis, reveals some more facts of CL, which have never been noticed before, and further confirms Cinque’s (2006) assumption.
