Interpretation of indefinite shenme in Mandarin Chinese
Indefinite shenme ‘what’ has a set of linguistic properties that distinguishes it from wh-indefinites like shei‘who’ and nali ‘where’, as illustrated below. ‘Insignificance’ interpretation In negative statements indefinite shenme can be assigned an ‘insignificance’ interpretation, in addition to the ‘none’ interpretation (1a). By contrast, wh-indefinites like shei admit only the‘none’ interpretation when they appear under negation (1b), as observed by Lin (1998).
