The Acquisition of the NPI renhe ‘any’ in Mandarin Chinese
It is well known that the distribution and interpretation of negative polarity items (NPIs) like any in English are subject to certain linguistic constraints, including being licensed in downward entailing (DE) contexts (Ladusaw 1979). It is important to discover when children are aware of the restrictions of the distribution and interpretation of NPIs. We know from previous studies that young children’s (elicited) productions of NPIs never exceed the licensing conditions of adult grammar (O’Leary 1994, O’Leary and Crain 1994, Van der Wal 1996, Song 2000, Zukowski 2001).
