Derivation of Two Types of Mandarin BA Construction:A Distributed Morphology Approach
The Mandarin BA construction, (1) and (2), is reanalyzed in this paper within the framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz 1993, 1994; Marantz 1997).(1) a. 张三把橘子剥了皮。 b. 一瓶酒把一桌人醉倒了。The arguments underlined are non-core arguments, as they (including the introducer BA) can be cut out without causing ungrammaticality. In the literature, sentence (1) is claimed by some to be derived via possessor raising (e.g., Han 2000; Xu 1999, 2005), and BA is responsible for attraction of the possessor raising. For sentence (2), some claim that BA is a causative marker, and as such it introduces a Causer as its subject external argument.
